How to increase my driver distance?
Im 15, im skinny, but i have a 10.5 degree Cleveland XLS HiBore Monster regular flex, and i hit it about 225, its not bad, i just want better.
Not being able to see what your swing looks like makes answering the question a little bit more difficult.
But first of all, forget all of the suggestions and nonsense about training at your age. At 15 when you still should have great flexibility and a developing strength that is all you need right now. Tiger Woods played lots of golf at your age and didn't worry a second about "training" at your age (that came later in his 20's) and could hit the ball 300 yards as a very skinny kid at 16. And Bubba Watson: he is still skinny with pencil like arms, says he has never worked out a day in his life, and he can pound the ball regular 340 yards if he wants.
Ok, I am going to give you a few things that add distance to the golf swing. But if you try these without tried and true golf fundamentals to support them, they may not work very well, or if they do work for you, they might add distance, but at the expense of accuracy.
The fundamentals. Easier said then done. Your grip, stance, posture must be flawless (if you don't think they are, then get a good golf book like Ben Hogan's fundamentals of golf.. Your upper body, hands, forearms, wrists, arms, shoulder must be without tension and feel relaxed through the entire swing. You must be able to feel a sense of balance throughout the swing and that includes not swaying back (on the back swing) and your weight going to the outside of your right foot (if you swing right handed) and then you need to be able to shift your weight to your left foot (not the outside) while using your legs and hips to initiate the downswing while keeping your head behind the ball until contact is made.
Ok, so now you are ready to do some things that will make the ball explode off the club.
1. To hit long you have to think long. That is like anything else in golf, a big part of it lies in your intent and imagination. That is you don't get up there saying to yourself you are going to smash the crap out of it as that will only make you over swing and get worse results. Instead, you get up there telling yourself you are going to hit it long, see it going a long way, and then let your body do its thing to make it happen.
2. The wrists must remain relaxed the entire swing and hinge completely as far as they will go at the top of the swing. However, you don't do this by forcing them to hinge. You swing the club back and by keeping the wrists relaxed they the momentum of the club will naturally hinge them (watch Phil Michelson hit his driver, he is a great example of this). Even if you can do this, the tendancy for many players is to tighten their grip prior to impact and locking their wrists and losing alot of distance.
3. You must turn your back/shoulders at least 90 degrees. You can't take a full back swing without doing this, and if you don't take a full back swing you limit the time and distance you have to accelerate the club head. Also without this turn you can not create the "x" factor which is the resistance of the hips (turning only 45 degrees) to the back/shoulders that properly coiled adds an explosive element to the swing.
4. You need to create lag and a feeling of pressure in the club. This can be done by beginning your downswing by beginning to shift your weight back to the left and beginning the drive/turning of the hips and legs (down to the knees) just before the back swing finishes. Many top golfers do this, and I have found it works best for me as well. However, the most important thing to remember about this is the downswing must begin with the weight shift and the legs. If you start with the hands and or arms/shoulders you will lose a ton of power right away. It creates the classic over the top swing (which most often causes a slice) but in turns of power it creates an upper body swing only that tends to lock up and expend most of its energy prior to impact, and then also creates the famous "reverse pivot" where the weight simultaneously goes backwards around impact further squandering any power available.
Also, starting the back swing incorrectly tends to make you hit at the ball, instead of swinging through it. Hitting at the ball is an incorrect golf mindset, but more importantly is a consequence of doing a host of other things wrong and you will never be able to hit the ball a long distance.
If you have done the correct things I have suggested above, your swing speed will increase through the ball as your wrists un-cock at the right time naturally if they and your upper body have remained relaxed. Your relaxed shoulders will allow your arms and upper body to release naturally through the ball as they catch up to the hips which have turned fully ahead to the left in advance as your upper body comfortably faces the target, and your hands (still relaxed) and the club's momentum cause them to finish behind your head.
And you smile and think to yourself, gee I am 15, skinny at that, and I just hit the ball 280 yards. Cool.
