How often should i replace my golf clubs?

How often should I replace my driver, woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and putter with new clubs?

I agree with Julian. The golf magazines are basically offering free advertising for the big-name companies by doing their Hot Lists and Club Tests. All it is is regurgitated information from their ads.

The Callaway FT-3 is going on four years old. By the golf magazine's standards, it's ancient. My SuMo 5000 is close to receiving retirement benefits, if you believe that stuff. Yet read some forums... people still can poke a 275-300 yard shot with the FT-3 or SuMo (or Ping G5, Titleist's 905, etc.).

It's about creating the right launch conditions, based on swing speed and contact on the sweet spot (which, contrary to what they'd make you believe, never gets bigger- that's physically impossible). If the loft of the driver and weight, length and flex of the shaft are right for you, you'll have optimized your equipment. Anything else is superfluous.

As for the other clubs, replace them if the face/head breaks, or if the grooves are so worn the face is flat. There isn't much to irons and wedges- they haven't changed very much in the last 10 or so years. The box grooves been around for a while now, and regrooving with a tool (about $20 for a good one) is much cheaper than buying a new one.

You shouldn't have to change putters unless the face insert breaks (unlikely) or the head breaks from the hosel (again, unlikely, unless it's mistreated).
