new to golf. explain what clubs i use at what times please?

just got my 1st set of clubs, complete set of irons, 1,3,5 woods, graphite driver, putting wedge etc. what i'd like to know is mainly the distance. which club for which drive?
I'm not a complete newb to sports, i've played baseball, football since i was 5 or 6 and I have a natural golf swing and I understand the common courtesy involved in sports. trust me...I'll do a lot of swinging at the range before I ever step on the course.

Irons:

Irons are mainly used after teeing off, but before making it on the green. The various sizes of the irons are in correlation to the distance / airtime of the ball upon impact. Thus, a lower number iron (1 iron, for example) will launch the ball a lot further than a higher number iron (9 iron, for example), but the 9 iron will pop the ball higher up into the air than a 1 iron.

Aside from the obvious difference in distance, the slope of the clubs serve other purposes such as making it easier to cut through grass, especially when in the rough. Another key is that when hitting the ball higher, you create more backspin on the ball causing the ball to land with minimal to no roll. Conversely, hitting the ball low creates more forward spin causing the ball to roll after landing.

Putters:

I'm sure you know what this is for, so I won't elaborate on it. One thing I'd like to point out though is that I have, on a couple of occasions, used a putter to hit myself into the fairway. The reason why is because the putter has no slope at all, so the ball won't pop up into the air and possibly hit a tree or tree branch that was blocking my way to the green. But mainly, it's for putting.

Wedges:

Wedges are basically highly angled irons. The slope on the club head is much steeper and the head is a little bit bigger, making these clubs ideal for hitting out of precarious situations like sand traps and deep rough areas. Also, you can use them on the fringe or fairways just before getting to the green because of their lack of distance and chance of hitting the ball properly enough to create more spin for less roll when landing on the green.

Woods:

These are your power clubs! The obvious use for woods is driving the ball off the tee and far! You want to make sure you practice a lot with your woods because the woods are the hardest clubs to swing with.

Woods are mainly used off of a tee because tees make it easier to hit off of. Hitting off of a tee will add 20+ yards to your swing compared to hitting off of short grass.

The angle on the club head of woods are close or a little less than the slope on a 1 iron, thus you're aiming to hit for distance with these clubs. The difference, however, is that woods have less impact space on the club head meaning the point of impact on the club head must be very precise or else the ball will slice, hook, draw, or fade. Driving the ball off a tee is one of the most difficult aspects of golf.

Most of the time you will be driving with your driver. Makes sense. So, what do you do with the other 2 woods? As you know, woods are used to get the most distance, thus the other woods are designated for use after your drive (on longer holes like Par 4 and Par 5 holes), assuming your drive was a good one. A good drive will land you into the fairway where you will get the best lie for your ball because you're not hitting through a patch of grass, but instead you're hitting off of soft, short blades of grass that won't take away from the accuracy and power of your swing. The 1 wood and 3 wood don't differ very much, so it's a matter of comfort. The 3 wood will be a bit easier to hit with because of the slope on the club head, though.

A 5 wood is almost similar to hitting with a 1 iron except that it has more slope on the club head than a 1 iron, yet still gives off a bit more power. If the ball is on the fairway, might as well hit for distance so I'll usually go with a 5 wood.

Graphite Shafts:

These shafts, compared to other standard shafts, have more flexibility when swinging so you'll get more power on your swing. They're also lighter than the regular shafts, so it's more comfortable to swing with.
