What is the purpose of two-way zippers on jackets?

I have a leather jacket with a two-way zipper. It is really annoying me, for I can't separate the jacket. Is there a way to separate the jacket like how you would on normal jackets.

The top zipper is used for zipping up the coat. The bottom one is used for opening the coat a bit from the bottom.
Example: You zip up the coat with one of the zippers. Then you pull the other zipper up too, and there will be some room to "air"
