Most likely it's a tumor. As with people, they can be "benign" or "malignant," but, basically, there really isn't anything you can do. There is no medication for tumors. The fish may be able to live with it for the rest of its life with no ill effects and then it may die from the tumor. You just have to let it be. If the tumor doesn't affect swimming and doesn't grow rapidly or unevenly, then it might be okay. If it does do any of these things you might want to consider taking it to a fish vet. Now, people on here are constantly saying, "take it to the vet," not realizing how difficult it is to find a vet that specializes in fish. If there are three or four in the entire state, that would be a lot. But, if you could find a fish vet in your area, first, get his opinion on the tumor and see how much he would charge to remove the tumor if you are concerned. Good luck!
