£1200 for a 12 year old Metro? The car was outdated when it was introduced in the early 80's - it was supposed to replace the original Mini, but failed miserably.
For the same sort of money, he could have got a decent Golf or Peugeot - more reliable and better built.
By the way, I've got nothing against Rovers - I've got a 416 myself (Honda engine) and it's a great car - but a Metro? No way!
