You use "petrol," so my American perspective may not fit conditions in the UK.

Hybrids:

As of now, no hybrids are worth a bowl of warm spit in terms of performance, unless you want to pay the $28,000 premium for the $107,000 Lexus LS600h or spring for the $90,000 Mercedes S400 (no comparable non-hybrid model).

The Lexus performs about the same in a straight line as the non-hybrid version, but the extra 600 pounds added by the batteries and electric motor, and the loss of 6.3 cubic feet of trunk to house them make it more a political statement than a practical proposition. You gain just 4 mpg in the city, and actually lose 1 mpg on the highway compared with the equivalent car with just the V8.

The Mercedes has light and compact LiIon batteries, and the electric motor/generator is integrated into the transmission, so they take less room and weigh less than the Toyota system in the Lexus. It is expected to get 22 mpg in the city and a more than respectable 33 mpg on the highway.

The rest of the hybrid fleet is about mileage, not performance. The reason refects the Lexus' problem. Adding an entire extra drive system adds weight and bulk, both enemies of performence.

Then there's purchase price premium (US versions & US$):

Civic: Hybrid $24,320; 4Cyl $18,925

In addition, if the car is not designed from the ground up for the system, it's smaller inside to make room for the hybrid system.

The Prius has the highest EPA ratings (51/48) of any US market car. The Insight, with its "Integrated Motor Assist" does not shut off the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) at stop lights and such, so it gets less (40/43).

Less gasoline used directly translates to less Carbon Dioxide emitted.

Dedicated Hybrids like these take extreme measures to wring every last mpg out of a gallon of gas, like lightweight materials to offset the weight of the 2nd drive system, and tires optimized for low rolling resistance rather than grip or ride. Some of these compromise the driving and riding experience. Someone at AutoWeek said it best in a driver's report on the Prius: "It's no worse than any other car that's not fun to drive."

Diesels:

Diesels now have no significant performance disadvantage over gas-fueled ICEs. BMW's 335d has awesome torque, and gets an amazing 242 miles more out of a tank than the 328i. Of course the diesel costs about $7,000 more here.

Evaluating Diesel economics against gasoline-driven ICEs is problematic. In the US the awful economy has diesel fuel selling for less than regular gas right now. As a result, some diesels (VW's "Green Car of the Year" Jetta TDI for instance, with a relatively mild $1,160 diesel cost premium) are a viable economic proposition, able to pay back the diesel purchase premium in a couple of years or less.

But when the economy recovers, and all those industries and retail establishments need more goods to sell and materials with which to make them, the long-haul truckers will be back at the pump competing with your diesel car for fuel, and the price will once again be back a half a buck more (or more) than premium.

And the Carbon Dioxide issue is clouded. Some of its better fuel economy comes because the fuel contains more carbon, which means more oxides thereof. Because of the inherent efficiency advantage of the compression ignition, in the end, most modern diesels will emit a little less than a gas-fueled car of comparable performance.

Gasoline-fueled ICEs:

However they build a hybrid, it's not going to hold five people comfortably and lap the Nurgburgring's Nordschleife in record time like a Cadillac CTS-V, or run 253 mph on the Ehra Lessien test track near Wolfsburg in Germany like a Bugatti Veyron. That's the exclusive province of gas ICEs for now.

Gasoline ICEs are not going away soon. New technologies like direct injection help, and for everyday driving satifaction and decent (though not astronomical) fuel economy and reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions, there are still, and will continue to be, good choices that offer a reasonable compromise between purchase price, fuel economy, emissions, and overall performance.

Over 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway are my minimum criteria for family sedans, and an American-market Honda Accord "petrol" 4-cylinder automatic (for instance) fills that bill nicely without demanding that you give up anything in terms of driving pleasure, and not breaking the budget.
