How much iron is safe in a baby?

I didn't know that my husband had already given our 14 month old her vitamin, and I gave it to her again. I'm worried, because it contains iron (10 mgs per dose) and she already gets plenty of iron in her food. I usually get the vitamins without iron for this reason, but didn't notice this time until it was home. Is 20 mgs, plus the iron in her food, dangerous? It's been a few hours and she seems fine; do I need to take her to the hospital?

She'll be fine. A little excess iron is fine for a baby, if it's not a constant or common thing.

You might notice that her poo will be on the darker brown to black side. Blackish poo can occur when a baby has too much iron in their diet or system. Sometimes formula fed babies can get this if they're taking in a lot of formula. It's their body's way of getting rid of the excess iron.

If you have questions though, call her doc. You don't need to take her to the hospital.
