When taking relief from a cart path, does it matter if your lie is unplayable?
I had a situation where my tee shot missed the fairway and my ball came to rest in a bush near a cart path. I could have made contact with the ball, but my chances of getting it out of the bush and back into the fairway were slim at best. I would have taken an unplayable lie, but my stance was on the cart path. When I took relief from the cart path, I then had a clear second shot. Was I entitled to take relief from the cart path even though the lie was unplayable?
Yes, you could take relief in that situation. A rules official though would have to be convinced you would've actually attempted the shot that required your foot be on the path. David Frost was denied relief once in this situation. Note also that if taking relief from cart part results in your ball ending up unplayable, tough luck.
