What did a gunner do in WW2?
I'm trying to trace my ancestry and have found out my great grand-father was a 'gunner' in the '40th Fld. bty. I'm unsure of what exactly a gunner did. Man a machine gun? Simply run around with a weapon? Any insight to what my grandpa's life would be like during this time and the tasks he would have to complete would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gunner is the lowest rank in the artillery,equivalent to the rank of private in the infantry.
As a member of the 40th Field Battery,your great grandfather was probably a member of the gun crew of an artillery piece.
