What are the black stains in my grooves of my teeth?

I have black stains in my grooves of my teeth. I asked the doctor if it is decay and he said no and that I shouldn't worry about it.

How do I know for sure it isn't decay? The teeth are not sensative to sweet, hot, cold.
yes I have been to the dentist aswell who said not to worry also so not sure...

what are signs of a cavity?

If your dentist has told you they they are not cavities then it's just stain. All it means is that the grooves on your teeth are deep and this is very common. What happens is that over the years with normal food consumption these grooves get satined, and because the bristles of a toothbrush are too big to get to get down in those grooves over times it causes staining which often appears black or dark brown in color. Now that staining can turn into cavities over time. My suggestion is the next time you visit your dentist tell him/her that you would like to have these grooves cleaned out and have a sealant placed to prevent cavities. For this treatment you do NOT need to be frozen so there will be no needles involved. Some dentist will only place sealants on kids but if you request them then he/she will place them.
