The Champions League was designed to make money. Inviting more clubs from the bigger leagues makes sense. It also creates a bigger spectacle to have more big clubs in it. Also being in the Champions League is no guarantee of domestic success... Let's not forget that Newcastle used to play in the Champions League and what happened to them? Relegated. Leeds qualified for the Champions League in consecutive and made it the semi-finals in 2001 and what happened to them? Relegated. Twice!

Champions League money didn't create the The Big Four. Chelsea's league position is maintained by the chequebook of Roman Abramovitch. Manchester United's is sustained by the money brought in through their global marketing empire. Arsenal maintain their league position by constantly renewing their supply of cheap, young talent and the unrivalled genius of Arsene Wenger. Liverpool kept their Champions League status by either winning the trophy or over-relying on individuals like Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard, which has obviously backfired.

The fact that no one had been able to break up the quadrupoly was due to the weaknesses of the contenders, not the strengths of the teams above.
