Should High school Juniors study the Odyssey and Iliad?

Much as I wish as many people as possible would learn to enjoy the Classics it appears from the many questions here the average american high school junior just cant understand or enjoy the Odyssey or Iliad?

I myself was surprised to learn Juniors were doing it since in my local state high school seniors read the Odyssey and Iliad as part of studying Ancient Greek History?

So what do you think?

Should the Odyssey and Iliad be set for senior level reading in high schools instead of junior?

Teachers and students in order to make up for all the times I've been severe and stern and strictly grumpy here's your chance to vent BUUUT do it with style!

I read both the Odyssey and the Iliad as a freshman in high school, yes it is very difficult to understand, however the earlier it is taught the better, so much of literature is based on these two works, they are both among my favorite works I have read in High School, and as a senior I have read many. Besides would we say Shakespeare is also not simple enough for a Junior, Shakespearean literature is in many ways I believe even more challenging than the Odyssey, yet many schools begin teaching Romeo and Juleit to freshman. Thus are we to say that because a work is challenging it should be held off? I believe that there is a serious flaw in your thinking, both of thses works are commonly alluded to in almost any literature written after these works, which is pretty much everything. The Odyssey is the quitessential story to illustrate the hero, and his journey, without knowing the Odyssey as early as possible students can lose many opportunities to gain so much more understanding. Having read the Odyssey when I did, required reading might I add, I was able to gain so much more as it was the first work I read for High School. I believe that by being forced to read it early, but with very strong aid from my teacher along the way along with a great deal of discussion and explanation I have come out for the better. I was able to undertstand all of the allusions to the epic poems in all that I have studied throughout the years. As a side note thre are so many teaching aids to works such as the odyssey, a fun way to try to get just a bit better is a movie, O Brother Where Art Thou, though very protested by many english professors at my school it is a way to simplify some of the ideas. Juniors can understand these works, I would know many schools in my state require it to be read freshman year, it just takes a bit more time and effort.

The Jungle Book (Mobi Classics) $1.19 The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories written by Rudyard Kipling. Kipling was born in India and spent the first 6 years of his childhood there. After about ten years in England, he went back to India and worked there for about six-and-half years. All of the stories were published in magazines in 1893-4. The original publications contained illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling. These books were written when Kipling lived in Vermont.The tales in the book (and also those in The Second Jungle Book which followed in 1895, and which includes five further stories about Mowgli) are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics and society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the story of a heroic mongoose, and "Toomai of the Elephants", the tale of a young elephant-handler. Kotick, The White Seal seeking for his people a haven where they would be safe from hunters, has been considered a metaphor for Zionism, then in its beginning.As with much of Kipling's work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, and succeeded by another. The title of each is given in italics in the list of stories below.The Jungle Book, because of its moral tone, came to be used as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts, a junior element of the Scouting movement. This use of the book's universe was approved by Kipling after a direct petition of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, who had originally asked for the author's permission for the use of the Memory Game from Kim in his scheme to develop the morale and fitness of working-class youths in cities. Akela, the head wolf in The Jungle Book, has become a senior figure in the movement, the name being traditionally adopted by the leader of each Cub Scout pack.
