Using brass wire brush to clean gross on BeCu clubs?
Is it ok to use a brass wire brush to clean the grooves on a Beryllium Copper club or will the brass scratch the club? Im just not sure about the hardness of BeCu and I really want to take good care of these clubs. Any info would be much appreciated!
Thanks Dick, that was very useful information. Now what about just between shots when i just want to keep my grooves clean? Just use a plastic bristle brush? And also, my clubs are pretty old (Becu Ping Eye 2's) im wondering if the grooves have lost some of there sharpness and if there is a way to resharpen them or what.... Thanks for your help so far!
I play BeCu wedges (Cleveland 588's, 51* and 56*) and I love them - best feel for wedges ever.
But, the environment hates them, so they are'nt made anymore, so if you have them or can get your hands on them, do it and take care of them.
So, they are very soft, and yes, a wire brush will cut right into them. I'll share with you my process for shining them. It is a little involved, but it works like a dream and they will be so shiny you can use them as a mirror for shaving. Just keep in mind that copper naturally oxidizes, and once you shine them, expect a nice patina to start appearing. I only shine mine once a year, at the beginning of each season. If they are dirty, etc, after a round, I just wash them in warm soapy water with a soft sponge, just to get the dirt off - no need to scrub.
Here's the pro style method:
First you need "The Club Eraser/Polisher" it is a small rubber type brick. I buy mine at a local golf retailer. The company who produces these, and I am giving you exactly how the label reads. "Tommy Braninger Sports" Southern Pines, North Carolina 28387. There is a golf website I know for sure carries them which is golfworks.com. The last one I purchased was $6.99 a few years ago.
There are a few other things involved to really get the shine though. The brick is good for getting started by removing the tarnish. Then I do the lightest amount of sanding possible without damaging the integrity of the metal with very fine sand paper (I'm talking like 2000 grit paper for wet sanding varnish, etc. If you pick up a sheet of 440 and think you're ok, then you might as well just use a wire wheel). I then use cotton buffing wheels with a tool called a dremel which is a small motorized tool that has different kinds of cotton buffing wheels. The final step I use is a polish by the name of "Simichrome" which is actually a polish made in Germany. There are a bunch of stores on ebay that sell simichrome. I just apply and buff and work with the club until I am satisfied. I should mention as well that I wash the head in soap and water in between steps.
If it sounds labourous and involved, then you are correct, but the process it well worth the final result. Your clubs will be so shiny that playing them in the sun might be distracting.
