Good beginner golf set suggestion?

I'm starting to get into golf, and I originally started with a cheap-o set off ebay (terrible mistake) now most of the iron heads are starting to come off, the driver is dented to heck, and the shaft on a wood has splintered.
I'm not looking to spend over $500 dollars, But I'm looking for a quality set that will last until I feel I'm good enough to upgrade.

I'm leaning towards an Adams Tight Lies set, Anyone know anything about these or have any suggestions?
The set I have now is complete garbage. All of the irons show signs of the head coming loose, only thing salvageable would be the putter, so I've definitely got to get a full set. I probably won't be upgrading anything until I finish school (2 1/2 years)

Any of the beginner sets from the reputable manufacturers (Callaway, TaylorMade, Adams, Ping, etc.) will be of a reasonable quality level...certainly well above what you have today. And don't be afraid to mix and match maunfacturers...just because your woods may be Taylor Made, there's no reason why your irons can't be from Callaway for example. So, shop the name brands with confidence.

What I recommend though, above all else, is that you "try before you buy". Whatever you do, don't simply buy a set of clubs based on the recommendations you get here or from friends. One of the things you'll learn as you start to play is that "feel" is everything in golf. If the clubs don't feel good in your hands, or when you swing them, or when you contact the ball, you're playing with the wrong clubs...try another set. And you'll be shocked how different one set of clubs will feel from another...even clubs that are supposed to be of the same quality level.

Take the recommendations you get here and go to a reputable golf store that has a good simulator. Working with the salesperson, try the different sets in the simulator....see which one you like best.

As well, keep an open mind and try any clubs the salesperson may recommend. They'll be watching you swing the club, asking you questions and the simulator will give them feedback about your swing speed, launch angle, etc. that we here in Yahoo Answers don't have access to. Who knows, you may end up liking the clubs the salesperson recommends better than anything you had on your list when you arrived at the store.

That's exactly what happend to me when I bought my new driver. I had some ideas of my own and got recommendations from friends and here in Yahoo Answers before I went shopping. Most of the recommended clubs performed better than the driver I was replacing, but in the end it was a club the salesperson recommended that I went home with...it was a good 10-15 yards longer on average than any of the others, and the max distance was 20+ more than any other. I was also hitting the ball straighter and with more consistency using this club.

So, in a nutshell...

1. Get recommendations here and from friends
2. Try before you buy
3. Keep an open mind when you go shopping...be willing to take suggestions

If you pick the right set of clubs it'll really help you develop your skills and improve your enjoyment of the game.
